A data center power or cooling startup gets on a vendor list in four steps. List the product to the UL or IEC standard the buyer checks. Map it to an Open Compute Project (OCP) spec that hyperscaler engineers use. Win one metered pilot. Then get named in the MEP engineer's specification before the EPC prices the job.

Who decides at a hyperscaler, a colocation operator and an EPC?

Four groups decide, and each one asks for different proof. At a hyperscaler, the owner sets the design standards, picks the site and works directly with utilities (iRecruit, August 2026), so the engineering group that writes the standard is your first buyer. Procurement and security gates follow. At Microsoft, any supplier that processes Microsoft Confidential Data must enrol in SSPA, and a new supplier must reach Green status before an engagement can begin (Microsoft, updated January 2026). Site drawings and live telemetry can bring a power product into that scope.

At a colocation operator, category managers own the supplier list. Equinix registers new suppliers in Coupa by email invitation only, and its category managers run sourcing events under NDA (Equinix, May 2021). Its Know Your Supplier program then sends risk questionnaires. Digital Realty assessed 196 Level 1 and 2 suppliers in 2025, covering 59% of its supplier spend, against a target to cut value chain emissions 25% by 2030 from a 2023 baseline (Digital Realty, accessed October 2026).

Buyer Who owns qualification What gets you considered First proof they ask for
Hyperscaler Infrastructure engineering, then procurement and security A product that fits their published or OCP design standard Spec match, certification, data protection answers
Colocation operator Category manager for electrical or mechanical An invitation to register and a sourcing event Supplier pack, sustainability rating, emissions data
EPC or general contractor Preconstruction and MEP procurement Being named in the specification they bid against Submittal package, lead time, field service plan
MEP consulting engineer Electrical or mechanical lead on the project Evidence they can defend to the owner Listing, guide specification, a reference site

Does OCP membership help, and what does it cost?

OCP membership gives you eligibility for the marks and the marketplace that hyperscaler engineers read. The product still has to match a spec. Corporate tiers cost $5,000 (Bronze), $25,000 (Silver), $40,000 (Gold) and $50,000 (Platinum) a year, and a Bronze member pays $5,000 more to join the Solution Provider program, which carries OCP Accepted and marketplace listings (OCP, accessed October 2026). The startup tier is full and runs a waitlist (OCP, accessed October 2026).

Recognition now runs through one mark. OCP retired the OCP Inspired logo after 31 July 2026 and folded its requirements into OCP Accepted, which needs a formal review against an approved OCP contribution (OCP, May 2026).

Pick the spec your product serves. Google, Meta and Microsoft co-authored Mt Diablo, a ±400 VDC power rack for IT racks from 100 kW to 1 MW, and Google committed its Project Deschutes coolant distribution unit design to OCP (Google Cloud, April 2025). A one-page spec match against Open Rack v3, Mt Diablo or Deschutes gives an engineer a reason to take the call.

Which certifications do buyers check, and how long do they take?

Buyers check the listing for your product class first, because the MEP engineer has to defend every named product to the owner. The common listings:

Plan the calendar before you plan outreach. One storage vendor's guide puts a full UL 9540A campaign at 3 to 6 months, with the best labs booked 3 to 6 months ahead, and UL 9540 listing at 3 to 12 months (Sunlith Energy, September 2025). Treat these as planning ranges from a vendor source. If your listing is still in progress, send the lab name, the booked slot and the target date.

How do you get a pilot or a reference site?

Ask for a bounded pilot with written pass criteria, metered data and an agreed right to reference the result. Operators run test sites for this purpose. Equinix opened a Co-Innovation Facility at DC15 in Ashburn where partners test-drive new equipment and software in Equinix facilities, starting with fuel cells, liquid cooling and sodium-ion batteries (Data Center Frontier, January 2022). In November 2025, Flex deployed rack-level direct liquid cooling there in a single OCP ORv3 rack (Flex, November 2025).

Supply pressure gives operators a reason to test a new name. In Uptime Institute's 2026 supplier survey, 58% of vendors reported delays of at least 3 months, and 38% said all their data center customers may be exposed to delays, up from 27% in 2025. The same survey had 83% of vendors reporting rising customer adoption of direct liquid cooling and 68% for other on-site power generation (Uptime Institute, August 2026). Put a ship date and a quarterly unit capacity in the pilot proposal.

How do you get named in the EPC and MEP specification?

Get named before bid. After award, a contractor who wants to swap in your product must file a substitution request with a comparison chart against the first-listed manufacturer, certify that the product conforms in every respect, and waive rights to extra payment or time if it fails, and the consultant has 14 days to recommend acceptance or rejection (Section 01 25 00 template, MasterFormat 2016 edition). That waiver puts your failure risk on the contractor's balance sheet.

The cheaper path runs through the MEP consulting engineer. Give the engineer a guide specification in CSI format, a submittal package, and a reference contact. Ask to appear as a listed manufacturer on the next data center project, then tell the EPC's preconstruction team you are in the spec. Our Outbound service books these meetings with MEP leads, EPC preconstruction teams and colocation category managers.

What should you have ready before outreach?

  1. A listing number for your product class, or a dated test plan with the lab slot booked.
  2. A one-page spec match against the OCP design your buyer uses.
  3. A guide specification in CSI format that an MEP engineer can paste into a project manual.
  4. A comparison chart against the incumbent product on performance, weight, footprint and service.
  5. A lead time and quarterly unit capacity you will commit to in writing.
  6. Pilot results with metered data and one customer contact who will take a reference call.
  7. A supplier pack: signed code of conduct, EHS questionnaire answers, insurance certificates, emissions data and a sustainability rating.
  8. Data protection answers for any telemetry or site data your product touches, with ISO 27001 status.
  9. A field service and spares plan by region.
  10. A named target list per account: the engineering standard owner, the category manager and the MEP leads on active projects.
