Community banks typically close technology deals in 3 to 6 months, while Tier-1 global banks take 12 to 24 months once security review, legal negotiation and board approval are included (Prospeo, October 2026). You shorten the cycle by qualifying the bank's review structure early, preparing risk evidence before the bank asks, and helping your sponsor write the requirements before procurement opens.
What causes the long cycle at large banks?
Large banks layer security, legal, procurement, compliance and sometimes board review on top of the commercial decision, and each function runs its own process. Prospeo's 2026 guide puts Tier-1 banks at 12 to 24 months. Tomba's August 2026 estimate is shorter, at 6 to 18 months for Tier-1 banks and insurers, and 3 to 6 months for mid-market banks and credit unions. Both are vendor estimates, so use them as a planning range.
| Buyer | Typical cycle | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Community bank | 3 to 6 months | Prospeo, October 2026 |
| Mid-market bank or credit union | 3 to 6 months | Tomba, August 2026 |
| Tier-1 bank or insurer | 6 to 18 months | Tomba, August 2026 |
| Tier-1 global bank, with security, legal and board review | 12 to 24 months | Prospeo, October 2026 |
| Vendor onboarding at a large bank, after the commercial yes | 6 to 12 months | GreySpark, April 2025 |
Plan your pipeline coverage and cash runway against the top of the range for the bank type you sell to.
Onboarding adds more time after the commercial yes. GreySpark wrote in April 2025 that larger vendors can absorb a wait of 6 to 12 months for bank onboarding, and that smaller vendors often cannot. Put onboarding inside your forecast for the deal, because revenue starts only when it ends.
How do you qualify the account to set a realistic timeline?
Ask three questions in discovery:
- Who approves vendor contracts at this institution, and does the board see contracts of this size?
- Which security and compliance frameworks apply to vendors in your category?
- How many technology vendors of similar scope has the bank onboarded in the past 18 months?
The answers tell you whether you face a 3-month cycle or a 24-month one. A community bank may have one compliance officer who coordinates vendor review. A global bank routes the vendor through information security, legal, procurement, risk, compliance, business continuity and audit, and each team has its own timeline and deliverables.
What evidence should you prepare before the bank asks?
GreySpark lists the documents banks demand: SOC 2, ISO 27001, penetration-test reports and detailed disaster-recovery plans, plus cyber liability and professional indemnity insurance. Canapi notes (April 2023) that banks examine the nature of the relationship and the provider's controls. A complete control pack on day one removes rounds of questions.
Cover data flows, subcontractors, access controls, incident response, business continuity, regulatory responsibilities and audit evidence. Index the pack by bank function, so the bank's team can route each section to the right reviewer.
Ask the bank how it will classify your offering by risk tier. Mindsprint puts due diligence and selection at 2 to 8 weeks by tier (September 2026). If your product does not touch customer data, hold privileged access or run a critical operation, show that clearly, so the bank can place you in a lower tier.
How do you map your sales process to the bank's procurement stages?
The US interagency third-party risk guidance uses five stages: planning; due diligence and third-party selection; contract negotiation; ongoing monitoring; and termination (OCC, 2024). Map your sales steps to these stages and supply the evidence for each one in a single indexed package.
The FDIC's selection practices (March 2024) call for a defined purpose, an evaluation team, a project plan, functional requirements and a statement of work before the RFP. Help your sponsor draft the business case, requirements, implementation plan and target outcomes before procurement opens. Once the RFP is out, a vendor has little room to shape the process.
Name the procurement, security, legal and business sponsors in the first weeks and engage them in parallel. Security review that starts only after the business team agrees adds its full length to the end of the cycle.
What happens after the contract is signed?
Fifth Third's supplier handbook (May 2025) states that a contract must be in place before goods or services are provided, and that execution needs the supplier's signature plus two bank signatures. Plan for any pilot to start after contracting.
Supplier setup in the procurement system is quick by comparison: APQC data cited by Mindsprint puts the median at 3.0 calendar days across 3,047 organisations (September 2026). That figure covers the administrative record only. Send complete legal entity, tax, banking, insurance and payment details in the bank's format on the day it asks.
Checklist: shorten the bank sales cycle
- Qualify the bank by size, review structure and buying authority on the first discovery call.
- Have SOC 2, ISO 27001, penetration-test results, disaster-recovery plans and insurance certificates ready before the bank requests them.
- Assemble a control pack covering data flows, subcontractors, access controls, incident response, regulatory responsibilities and audit evidence, indexed by bank function.
- Ask how the bank tiers vendors by risk, and match your evidence to that tier.
- Help your business sponsor draft the business case, requirements, implementation plan and outcomes before procurement opens.
- Engage procurement, security, legal and compliance in parallel from the first weeks.
- Get the bank's standard contract template and signature workflow early.
- Send complete supplier setup details in the bank's required format on the day of the request.
