A fractional head of business development costs about $11,700 a month in the US. Vendux's 2025 report, drawn from more than 1,000 assignments, puts average monthly pay for fractional sales leaders at $11,732, at an average of $225 an hour for 14.6 hours a week. A full-time US sales manager earns a median $148,270 in salary alone (May 2025).

What does the market data say?

Few public datasets track fractional business development as its own title. The closest is fractional sales leadership, which covers most of what the BD seat does at a company under 500 people: pipeline, partnerships and deal strategy, part time.

Read the Vendux numbers with their source in mind. Vendux runs a fractional sales marketplace, and the figures come from its own assignments and survey respondents.

The BLS salary also understates what an employer pays. Benefits made up 30.0% of private-industry compensation cost in June 2026. Applied to the median, a $148,270 salary implies about $211,800 a year in total cost, or about $17,650 a month (our arithmetic on BLS figures, October 2026). Benefit shares for managers can sit above or below the all-worker average.

What does our pricing look like?

Our own published prices give one more data point (our pricing, October 2026, on our advisory tiers):

  • The Diagnostic, $2,500. Two weeks. The fee credits in full toward any tier.
  • Spark, $9K a month. A monthly strategy session, a 12-month pipeline plan and 2 agents installed: the SDR Team and the Sales Intelligence Team.
  • Scale, $15K a month. Everything in Spark, plus a weekly strategy call, a 3-year category plan tracked against named rivals, 3 warm intros a month and 4 agents installed, adding the Community and Content Teams.
  • Embed, $25K a month plus 10% of revenue generated. Everything in Scale, plus we run your institutional deals, with a 5-year category plan and all 5 agents installed by month 6, including the Institutional BD Team.

Every tier also runs our outbound engine, with a fee per qualified meeting under a monthly cap the client sets. The retainer pays for senior time, and meetings are paid for as they happen. Spark sits below the Vendux average, and Embed sits above it because it includes the execution work that an advisory-only engagement leaves to your team.

What drives the price up or down?

Six factors set where a quote lands.

  1. Hours. The average Vendux engagement runs 14.6 hours a week. Ask how many hours the quote assumes, then divide.
  2. Advice or execution. Reviewing your pipeline once a week costs less than building the list, writing the sequences, sending, and joining calls. Ask who does each task.
  3. Network. Warm intros to buyers you cannot reach cold add to the price. Ask which buyer types they can introduce you to, and how many intros a month the price includes.
  4. Buyer complexity. Banks and regulated fintechs run security reviews, vendor onboarding and legal review before they sign. A leader who has closed those buyers shortens the cycle and charges for it.
  5. Variable pay. Some fractional leaders take a lower retainer plus a fee per meeting held or a share of closed revenue. That moves part of the risk onto them.
  6. Term. The average Vendux assignment lasts 9.7 months. A three-month pilot leaves little time after setup, so price the pilot on outputs you can see by week 12.

How do you judge whether it is worth it?

Judge the hire on pipeline you can count, at a unit cost you can compare. Use this checklist before you sign.

  1. Write the outcome in numbers: qualified meetings a month, partnerships signed, pipeline value created.
  2. Compute cost per qualified meeting. Divide total monthly cost by meetings held, then compare the result with the in-house cost per meeting in how much should you pay per qualified meeting.
  3. Set a date for the first meeting held. New outbound domains need warmup, so expect most of month one to go on setup.
  4. Confirm who owns the assets. Domains, mailboxes, contact lists, CRM records and sequences should stay with you when the engagement ends.
  5. Ask who keeps the contact list clean, and how often. We re-verified 520 B2B contacts that a verifier had marked deliverable about 10 weeks earlier, and 118 of them (23%) came back invalid (our data, October 2026; same contacts run through a second verifier). Ask for a re-check before every send.
  6. Compare the monthly cost with a full-time hire at about $17,650 a month in salary and benefits (our arithmetic on BLS data, October 2026), before recruiting fees and equity.

When is a full-time hire the better buy?

Hire full time when business development is the main way the company grows and you already have a message that converts. The seat then needs a full week, a team under it and a permanent owner.

A fractional leader fits the earlier stage, when you still need proof. Which buyer segment answers? Which message books meetings? Which partner carries you to customers? At 14.6 hours a week, a fractional leader has time to find those answers and little time to build and manage a team.

You can run both. A fractional leader installs the engine while the permanent search runs, then hands over the target accounts, the sequences that worked and the deal notes. Ask for that handover in the contract on day one.

What should a fintech buyer ask in the first call?

Ask for specifics that a reference call can confirm.

  • Which regulated buyers has this person closed, and in what role?
  • Which assets will you own at the end, by name?
  • What is the cost per meeting held, and how is "held" defined?
  • What happens to price if meetings come in below plan for two months?

Good answers name buyers, dates and numbers. Vague answers usually mean the engagement is advice only, and you should price it that way.
